JOHNNY STEELE

biography

A native of Bunkie, Louisiana, Johnny Steele earned his Master of Landscape Architecture in 1977 and promptly moved to Houston, where he founded McDugald-Steele Associates with his friend and fellow LSU-alum, Doug McDugald.  Throughout his five decades of practice, Johnny has established himself as a nonpareil designer with an affinity for conceiving and building some of the most original and beautiful gardens in the city of Houston.

Johnny's work has also been recognized by a number of professional and civic organizations.  He has received awards and acknowledgements from the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Associated Landscape Contractors of America and the Texas Association of Landscape Contractors.  In 2008, he was selected by a jury of his peers to receive the first annual Star-Landscape Architecture award from the Decorative Center in Houston, Texas.   In 2009, he was one of four landscape architects honored by the Buffalo Bayou Partnership for his "vision in the design of many of Houston's most beautiful public and private gardens."

Johnny has also served on a number of impactful boards and committees, including the City of Houston's Hermann Park Garden Center Advisory Committee; Buffalo Bayou Partnership Board; the Museum of Fine Arts Houston Bayou Bend Garden Advisory Committee; and the Board of Directors for Newton Nursery.  In September 2014, friends of the new Buffalo Bayou Park honored Johnny by establishing the Johnny Steele Dog Park (Allen Parkway and Montrose/Studemont) in his honor.
